Contract staff salary calculator

For a daily-wage worker, pay = daily wage × (days present + half-days × ½ + paid leave). For a monthly salary, the full salary is paid less one day's pay for each unpaid day, where one day is the salary ÷ 26, ÷ 30 or ÷ the days in the month.

Overtime is one day's pay ÷ 8 per hour, at twice that rate by default, because the Code on Wages, 2019 requires overtime pay at not less than twice the normal rate of wages. Advances are deducted at the end.

Part of our guide: How to calculate salary for contract staff (daily and monthly wage)

The daily wage, or the full monthly salary.

What one day of a monthly salary is worth.

Full days, including late arrivals.

Each counts as half a day.

Unpaid days only. Weekly offs and paid leave are not absences.

The Code on Wages, 2019 requires overtime pay at not less than twice the normal rate of wages.

How is it calculated?

  1. Daily wage: days paid = days present + half-days × ½ + paid leave. Wages = daily wage × days paid.
  2. Monthly salary: one day's pay = salary ÷ 26, ÷ 30, or ÷ the days in the month. Unpaid days = absent days + half-days × ½. Salary earned = salary − one day's pay × unpaid days.
  3. Overtime: the normal hourly rate = one day's pay ÷ 8. OT pay = hours × that rate × 2 (or × 1 if you choose single rate, for example for client billing).
  4. Net payable = wages + overtime − advances. If the advance is larger than the pay, net payable is ₹0 and the rest carries to next month.
  5. Amounts are worked out exactly and rounded to the paisa once, at the end.

Worked example

A daily-wage worker on ₹700 a day: 22 days present, 2 half-days, 1 paid leave, 4 overtime hours and a ₹2,000 advance, overtime at twice the normal rate.

Days paid (22 + 2 × ½ + 1) 24 days
Wages (₹700 × 24) ₹16,800.00
Overtime (4 hours × ₹87.50 × 2) ₹700.00
Advance deducted −₹2,000.00
Net payable ₹15,500.00

Should you divide by 26, 30 or the days in the month?

The divisor only changes how much one day of a monthly salary is worth, and so how much each absence costs. For a ₹18,000 salary with 2 absent days and 1 half-day (2.5 unpaid days):

Basis One day's pay Deduction Salary earned
÷ 26 days₹692.31₹1,730.77₹16,269.23
÷ 30 days₹600.00₹1,500.00₹16,500.00
÷ 31 (a 31-day month)₹580.65₹1,451.61₹16,548.39

26 days treats the four weekly offs as unpaid, so each working day is worth more and each absence costs more. 30 days and calendar days spread the salary over every day, weekly offs included. Pick one, write it into the appointment letter, and use it every month. HaazriPro uses calendar days.

Frequently asked questions

How is a half-day paid?

A half-day counts as half a day: half a day's wage for daily-wage staff, and half a day's deduction for monthly staff.

Is late arrival a deduction?

No. In this calculator, as in HaazriPro, a late arrival is still a full day present. Mark a half-day if your policy cuts pay for it.

How is overtime worked out?

The normal hourly rate is one day's pay (on your chosen basis) divided by 8, and overtime is paid at twice that by default. The Code on Wages, 2019 sets overtime at not less than twice the normal rate, and rule 69 of the OSH (Central) Rules, 2026 takes a monthly-paid worker's daily wage as 1/26 of the monthly wage for overtime. Check which rules apply to you.

What if the advance is more than the month's pay?

Net payable becomes ₹0 and the rest of the advance is shown as still to recover, so you can deduct it next month.
