Half-day salary calculation for contract staff

To calculate half-day salary, pay half of one day's wage. For a daily-wage worker that is the daily wage ÷ 2. For a monthly salary it is half of (salary ÷ 26, ÷ 30 or ÷ the days in the month), deducted from the month. On ₹700 a day, a half-day pays ₹350. One legal limit matters: under the Code on Wages, a daily-rated worker who is sent home early because there was no work is still owed the full day.

What counts as a half-day?

A half-day is a day on which the staff member worked roughly half the normal hours, by their own choice or under your policy: they arrived very late, left early for personal work, or took half a day off. It is not a weekly off, not paid leave, and not an absence. Write your definition into the appointment letter or your standing policy, for example "less than four hours on duty is marked as a half-day", and apply it the same way to everyone.

How do you calculate half-day pay for daily-wage staff?

Count each half-day as 0.5 of a day and add it to the full days worked. Then multiply by the daily wage.

MonthFull daysHalf-daysDays paidPay at ₹700
Staff member A26026₹18,200.00
Staff member B22424₹16,800.00
Staff member C03015₹10,500.00

Do the multiplication once on the total, not half-day by half-day, so rounding does not creep in. If the daily wage is ₹333.33, a full day plus a half-day is just under ₹500 before rounding (₹333.33 × 1.5), which rounds to ₹500.00.

How do you calculate half-day pay for monthly salaried staff?

For a monthly salary, the staff member is paid the full salary unless days are marked unpaid. A half-day reduces the month by half of one day's pay. One day's pay depends on the divisor you use:

Divisor for ₹18,000One dayHalf-day deductionSalary after 1 half-day
÷ 26₹692.31₹346.15₹17,653.85
÷ 30₹600.00₹300.00₹17,700.00
÷ 31 (calendar days in a 31-day month)₹580.65₹290.32₹17,709.68

Which divisor is right is a separate question, explained in our guide to 26 vs 30 days salary calculation. HaazriPro uses calendar days for monthly staff and counts a half-day as 0.5 for both daily and monthly staff.

When can't you cut a half-day?

Section 10 of the Code on Wages, 2019 protects daily-rated staff. If an employee whose minimum wage is fixed by the day works less than a normal working day on a day they were employed, they are entitled to the wages "as if he had worked for a full normal working day". There are two exceptions:

  • the shortfall was caused by the worker's unwillingness to work, not by the employer failing to provide work; or
  • another case the rules prescribe. For example, the 2026 central rules exclude workers who agreed to work part-time.

In practice: if the client closes the site at noon and sends everyone home, that is not a half-day. The staff are owed a full day, and you should check whether your contract lets you bill the client for it. If a staff member leaves at noon for personal work, a half-day is fair. Record the reason with the mark, so a dispute months later can be settled from the record. Check with your CA or labour consultant if a case is unclear.

Half-day or late: which should you mark?

Coming late and working the rest of the day is normally a full day present, marked as late. A half-day is for a real loss of about half the working hours. Mixing the two causes more payday arguments than almost anything else.

Arrived 4 hours late by choiceHALFHalf a day

If your policy cuts pay for repeated late arrival, say so in writing and mark the day as HALF when the rule is triggered, so the cut is visible on the attendance sheet and the salary slip, not hidden in the arithmetic.

Can a half-day be adjusted against paid leave?

Yes, if your leave policy allows it. Many employers let a staff member with a leave balance use half a day of paid leave instead of losing half a day's pay. Decide the rule in advance and apply it to everyone. Either the half-day is always adjusted against leave while a balance remains, or it is never adjusted. Then show it clearly: a half-day of leave is paid, an unpaid half-day is not. For monthly staff, HaazriPro lets you set a number of paid leave days per month that absences and half-days use up first, in date order, before any pay is deducted.

How should half-days show on the salary sheet?

  • Count half-days separately from full days on the monthly attendance sheet.
  • Show "days paid" with the half: for example 24.5, not 25.
  • For monthly staff, show the half-day deduction as its own line.
  • Keep the same rule for overtime: a half-day does not create overtime unless the hours worked go beyond the normal working day. See overtime rules for contract staff.

The staff salary calculator handles half-days for daily and monthly staff, and our guide to calculating salary for contract staff puts half-days in the context of the whole month.
