Overtime calculator for contract staff

Overtime pay = (daily wage ÷ 8 hours) × overtime hours × the overtime rate. The Code on Wages, 2019 requires overtime at not less than twice the normal rate of wages, the same rule the Factories Act, 1948 had. Choose the rate that applies to your staff, and check with your CA or labour consultant.

Part of our guide: How to calculate salary for contract staff (daily and monthly wage)

By HaazriPro Team · Last updated

Leave at 8 hours unless your contract says the daily wage covers a 12-hour shift.

How is it calculated?

  1. Ordinary hourly rate = daily wage ÷ 8 hours (or ÷ 12 if you choose a 12-hour shift; see the warning in the FAQ).
  2. Overtime hourly rate = ordinary hourly rate × 1 or × 2.
  3. Overtime pay = overtime hourly rate × overtime hours, rounded to the paisa once.

Worked example

A worker on ₹800 for an 8-hour shift works 3 extra hours at double rate:

Ordinary hourly rate (₹800 ÷ 8) ₹100.00
Overtime hourly rate (× 2) ₹200.00
Overtime pay (3 hours) ₹600.00
Total pay for the day ₹1,400.00

Frequently asked questions

Is overtime always paid at double rate?

The four Labour Codes came into force on 21 November 2025. Section 14 of the Code on Wages, 2019 says overtime is paid at not less than twice the normal rate of wages. For central-sphere establishments, rule 69 of the OSH (Central) Rules, 2026 sets twice the rate of wages for a daily wager working more than 8 hours in a day, or another worker working more than 48 hours in a week. States set their own rules. Check which rules cover your staff and site.

What about 12-hour shifts?

Many security posts run 12-hour shifts. The law still treats hours beyond the normal working day as overtime, payable at not less than twice the normal rate, even when they fall inside a scheduled 12-hour shift. The calculator therefore uses the daily wage ÷ 8 by default. The 12-hour option spreads the wage over 12 hours and shows a warning; check with your CA or labour consultant before paying on that basis.

How are part hours counted?

Under rule 69 of the OSH (Central) Rules, 2026, 15 to 30 minutes of overtime count as half an hour and more than 30 minutes as a full hour. Enter the hours after rounding, for example 2.5.

Is late arrival deducted from overtime?

This calculator does not net late arrival against overtime. Enter only the extra hours actually worked.
